“I’ve
been waiting forever for this!” The perky red head exclaimed next to
me, “I’m a legacy. My mom, aunt, and grandma were all Delta Lambda
Omegas!”
“That’s awesome.” I replied, wishing I had chosen to wear pants. My underwear was riding up, giving me a terrible wedgie.
“What about you?” she asked.
“Oh,
I’m just browsing. I don’t know if I’m really the sorority type. My
parents want me to be more social though.” I said, “Sorry.” I apologized
awkwardly.
The girl laughed, “No worries! This is all about sisterhood. Everyone is welcome. I’m Hannah.” She said, outstretching her hand.
I smiled gratefully, “Elliot.” I said returning the handshake. “So do you know what’s going to happen next?” I asked.
“I’m not sure, my mom wouldn’t say. She said the surprise is part of the fun.” Hanna answered.
“Great.” Was my unenthusiastic response, “I love surprises.”

I
was having a pleasant dream, when what sounded like hammering woke me.
After that, I could barely hear the muffled sound of dirt covering the
coffin over my own screams.
“Let
me out! Somebody help!” I cried for my life, “Someone’s in here!
Someone alive! Please!” I scratched at the box all around me.
I
began hyperventilating, tears streaming down my eyes. I didn’t want to
die. I wasn’t ready to die. I was going to die. With that thought, I
relaxed, accepting the inevitable.
Then I heard laughter and cheering. The coffin lid flew open, covering me with loose dirt.
As candlelight flood my eyes, I noticed the holes in the box and how I was never underground.
“Congratulations!”
someone shouted at me, “You’re a DLO!” Another round of cheering
erupted, as I sat up stunned. Then I began laughing, I wasn’t dead!
Someone
helped me out and I fell to the ground in relief, “You crazy
sociopaths!” I yelled, exhilarated. Then I began laughing again, this
was going to be an interesting year.
